History
In 1980, a group of educationally progressive parents dreamed of creating a preschool that would serve to educate both typical children and those with special needs. They envisioned a school in which parental involvement was central to the mission. Approaching the Quaker meeting of Louisville, they established such a preschool under the auspices of the Friends Council for Social Concerns. Friends School was born!
Initially housed in the Friends Meetinghouse, the school moved to Douglass Boulevard Christian Church and then to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Woodbourne before settling in it's present location in St. John's Lutheran Church on Breckenridge Lane. For several years, an elementary school program was housed at the original site until it, too, joined the preschool at St. John's. Eventually, the elementary school merged with another program and today Friends School serves children twelve months through seven in its preschool and kindergarten programs.
In 1992, the school received its own nonprofit charter. Today, Friends School remains a nonsectarian, high-quality, family cooperative preschool.
